How we use the Danish

Design Guide

Watch how we use the Danish Design Guide to design packaging solutions that are easy to recycle

Design guide initiated by The Danish Plastics Federation

The Danish Design Guide is a guide initiated by The Danish Plastics Federation to support companies in designing recyclable plastic packaging made from recycled materials. The guide became a reality in February 2020 with the contribution of many renounced companies from the Danish packaging-, food- and retail industries as well as relevant NGOs.

As a company with decades-long expertise in plastic packaging, Plus Pack is one of the companies that have contributed to the development of the Design Guide, and we use the guidelines in our project team every day. As part of their campaign Realistisk om plast (“Realistic about Plastics”) which was launched in August 2020.

The Danish Plastics Federation has made a film at our headquarters to demonstrate how we apply the guide in the design phase of our products. Starring in the film is Ksenija Garbacenka, Group Sustainability Manager at Plus Pack, who explains the advantages of the Design Guide. She participated in developing the guide.

“The Design Guide provides a practical framework, serving as a checklist for companies when designing new products that are easy to recycle as well as new, circular business models”, Garbacenka says, and continues: “I am proud that we have participated in developing the Design Guide. It is an important tool for us when developing new products”.

Bistro™ Warm PP Clear - the perfect example

One example of a product that is easy to recycle is our new Bistro™ Warm PP Clear range for microwaveable ready-to-heat meals. Being the newest addition to our Bistro™ product family, it is a direct outcome of the Danish Design Guide. Compared to other microwaveable plastic packaging types, the Bistro™ Warm PP Clear trays are made from clear PP mono-material. Mono-materials are easy to recycle in the recycling facilities.

“We need to accommodate our society so that waste can be treated as a new resource, which can be sorted and handled into a quality that makes it possible for companies like Plus Pack to apply used plastic in new products”. She adds: “This requires that we take a critical look at the recycling systems that exist in the world today”.
