Recyclability
in practice
TalThi sells recyclable, high-quality food packaging in Canada. Lately, the company has met challenges: Canadian waste separation facilities cannot detect black plastics. This means that standard black plastic trays do not get sorted for recycling. This is not only the Canadian situation – the same challenge applies to European waste separation facilities.
Therefore, we developed a recyclable aluminium container in the popular Bistro™ range. TalThi was quick to take the new packaging to heart.
The launch of an aluminium Bistro™ range
solved the challenges
What to do when you have great ambitions for satisfying customers as well as the planet – but you are faced with difficulties in the real world?
TalThi consulted us about the challenge. Since the Canadian waste separation facilities could not detect standard black plastic trays, some of TalThi’s customers were looking for alternative materials. The focus was on recyclability and obtaining an attractive presentation of the food in stores. Also, the material had to tolerate high temperatures – preferably for heating in the oven as many customers produce pasta dishes with a cheese topping that need to be gratinated.
Therefore, Bistro™ Aluminium was launched, and the Canadian company quickly discovered the potential in the market. Three months after launch, 30 customers had moved to the new packaging solution and Bistro™ Aluminium is now expected to become one of the TalThi’s most favorable ranges.
With a shift to aluminium we also had the opportunity to offer the container in four different colors without compromising the recyclability of the packaging. This way, we ensure that the food stands out on shelf.
”The Bistro™ Aluminium container is exactly what we and our customers were looking for. The container is now fully recyclable in Canada, which means that CO2 reduction is legitimate. Another benefit for our customers is that the design of the container matches their current Bistro™ containers in plastic.
This helps their full range of products achieve a nice, coherent presentation. In addition, it is convenient that the container can be closed with lid and skin pack. In the end, the consumers get a convenient, solid container for heating meals in the oven”.

Bonus
facts
The Bistro™ Aluminium container is highly suitable for food. It has unique barrier properties and can tolerate going from the freezer or fridge directly into the oven, microwave oven, or on the grill.
Compared to CPET trays, these aluminium trays reduce the CO2 footprint by approximately 24%*. In addition, aluminium is recyclable without loss of quality and 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use.
