The company sells soup in a packaging solution made of traditional black plastic material.
Traditional black plastic packaging may not be detected by some sorting facilities because it often contains carbon black pigments. When packaging is not detected and correctly sorted, it may not enter the appropriate recycling stream.
The original soup bowl was not compatible with the relevant sorting facilities, so the company approached Plus Pack for a packaging solution designed to support sorting and recycling. So, they came to Plus Pack looking for a recyclable packaging solution.

Sorting and recycling options vary from country to country. Therefore, it is important to understand regional and local conditions before choosing a packaging solution. We did this by working closely with local sorting experts, who tested the new black packaging to confirm that it could be detected and sorted in the relevant facilities. With the new packaging solution for its soups, our customer was able to meet increasing retailer demand for packaging designed for recycling. Today, the soup bowls can be detected and sorted as polypropylene in the relevant sorting facilities. Today their soup bowls are detected at the sorting facilities as polypropylene.
This supports the possibility of the bowls entering a polypropylene recycling stream where suitable collection, sorting and recycling systems are available.
