Sorting is key to recyclable food

The company sells soup in a packaging solution made of traditional black plastic material.
Unfortunately, traditional black plastic packaging solutions are not easy to recycle as they usually contain the color carbon black which cannot be detected in the existing sorting facilities. And sorting is needed before a material can be recycled and used again in new products.
This meant that their original soup bowl was not recyclable, and this was an issue that they needed to deal with. So, they came to Plus Pack looking for a recyclable packaging solution.

The company wanted to keep their black colored packaging.
“This meant that our packaging experts developed a black packaging solution, which is sortable at the national sorting facilities and with today’s existing technologies.”
It differs from country to country what is sortable and thereby recyclable. Therefore, it is important to understand regional and local conditions before choosing a packaging solution. We did this by working closely together with local sorting experts. They tested the new black packaging to make sure that it was sortable in the sorting facilities.

With the new packaging solution for their soups our customer was able to meet the increasing demand for more sustainable packaging solutions. Today their soup bowls are detected at the sorting facilities as polypropylene.
This means that their soup bowls become a part of a circular loop where the materials are recycled instead of being incinerated.
