High-end circular packaging for Benelux private label tapas producer

The food industry is progressively emphasizing circularity, recycling, and CO2 footprint, both in terms of cost and environmental concerns. Thus, optimizing the entire value chain is imperative, with packaging being a central component.

In that light, Plus Pack was approached by a Benelux industrial food processing customer who outlined specific requirements for an imminent new product launch, with a focus on sustainability and premium presentation of the content.

Packaging with

a Purpose

As a supplier of private-label tapas to a large number of Benelux retailers, the company aimed to introduce luxury tapas plates in 7-compartment multi-trays for convenient sharing with friends and family.

"Their detailed list of requirements mirrored their climate-focused and quality-driven standards. They sought clear, recyclable packaging comprising at least 80% recycled content,” states Arjan van ES - Sales Manager Industry at Plus Pack.

Moreover, the packaging needed to be sealable, suitable for MAP production, and fit into CBL crates to optimize transportation and limit CO2 emissions.

"And finally, a luxury tapas plate must obviously present the food in a tasteful way that exudes premium quality while preserving the product's freshness," says Arjan van Es.

Upon discussing with the client, Arjan van Es set his sights on the new optimized Zen™ Selection Platter, a commodity packaging solution in rPET. The Zen™ Selection Platter was developed by Plus Pack’s product development team, led by Group Product Manager Marianne Babiel Kjær. She emphasizes that several features made the choice obvious.

"Zen™ Selection Platter matched the customer's environmental requirements perfectly with its 85% recycled content, while the clear plate showcases the tapas beautifully," she states.

A Transition from Plastic Lids

to Composite Sealing Film

Initially designed for customer segments with a short path from packaging to consumption, the Zen™ Selection Platter range favors plastic lids. However, for the Benelux food producer, a top seal was essential to reduce the volume of the packaging, optimize transport and ensure the necessary shelf life for the food.

"We customized the Zen™ Selection Platter trays to the specific challenge, swapping plastic lids with sealing film," Marianne Babiel Kjær elaborates, highlighting that this adaptation ensured the Benelux food processor incurred the minimal recycling fee (EPR). This customized Zen™ packaging not only benefited the customer's finances and sustainability efforts but also enhanced the consumer experience.

"This exemplifies the holistic approach in our product development and showcases our capability to innovate beyond traditional product boundaries when addressing unique client challenges."
