Design is key to circularity
at Plus Pack
With the innovative adaptation of design, materials, and production, we have transformed Plus Pack’s business to take advantage of resources more effectively.
Design plays
a central role
Design plays a central role in the development of new products. We produce food packaging solutions in aluminium and plastic and have committed ourselves to develop circular solutions that are made of already recycled materials and materials that are easy to sort and recycle.
Camilla Haustrup Hermansen, Deputy CEO and Director of Business Development, sees design as key to success in Plus Pack’s circular transformation. Focusing on design has made Plus Pack develop a portfolio of recyclable products that support a circular economy all the while reducing CO2-emissions.
“Instead of offering ‘one size fits all’ solutions, we customize products to fit the needs of our customers and their end-users and contribute to the reduction of food and waste of materials and resources. Our design approach has made it easier for us to understand which processes the packaging is a part of, and therefore determines the product’s circularity in the design phase through choice of material, and sometimes shape. It is in the design phase that the life cycle of a product is decided”

All of Plus Pack’s design decisions
are based on 4 fundamental questions
- Can the product material be recycled?
- Is recycled content an option?
- Can the product be easily recycled or reused after use?
- Can the product reduce food waste and eliminate waste?
Having answered those questions, we ensure that the project is aligned with our circular mindset when it comes to designing new food packaging solutions
“It is all about changing the way we use materials. We all need to promote recycled materials and create more cycles that extends life of materials. By increasing the opportunities for reuse and recycling of packaging solutions, and by prioritizing materials that are easy to identify, sort and recycle at a large scale”
Camilla Haustrup Hermansen - Deputy CEO, Director of Business Development
Think circularity
into the decision-making phase
This way of working has helped companies transform complex knowledge to concrete practice in daily operations. As a result of new design, production, distribution, and consumption Plus Pack has ensured that all resources are used more effectively in the long-term perspective.
“Danish production companies should consider the potential in increasing circularity in every decision they make, as it has a big impact on the environment, and the climate profile of the solutions and products that are brought to the market. This can be done by integrating design thinking and methods into their company development.”
“This requires more innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing across industries, sectors and value chains. The good news is, this is a win-win for companies as well as the planet”, says Camilla Haustrup Hermansen.
